Lore & Background

Whenever Alucard drinks his victim's blood, he absorbs the soul of that person to obtain their memories while converting the victim into an extension of himself referred to as a Familiar. This process forms the basis of his army: every enemy he has ever slain contributes to a reservoir of darkness he can summon at will. During the Battle of London, Alucard began absorbing the blood of the millions who died, thus giving himself an indefinite number of regenerations and a new army of the dead. The army is not composed of loyal soldiers but of soulless constructs that exist solely to execute the will of their creator. Anderson, augmented into a supernatural being by the Nail of Helena, managed to critically injure Alucard during their final duel, which created a chain reaction that destroyed all Alucard's familiars except Luke Valentine and the Hellhound. Although Alucard recovered thanks to Seras' intervention and successfully defeated Anderson, he was then attacked by Walter, who had undergone vampirization by Millennium in order to kill Alucard when he was most vulnerable. However, Walter was tricked (via illusion) into killing Valentine instead; before he could get another chance to land a fatal blow, Alucard began absorbing the blood of the millions who died in the Battle of London.

In Their Own Story

The rain in Berlin turned black as the ground began to heave, not with tremors, but with rising forms. From the mud and shattered asphalt, thousands of pale hands clawed their way up, dragging rotting bodies and monstrous beasts into the moonlight. They did not speak; they only hungered. The streets were instantly choked by a writhing sea of fangs and claws, a silent, shuffling tide that swallowed the screams of the living whole. At the center of this nightmare stood a figure in a long coat, watching his creation with a grin that promised no mercy, as the Shadow Army marched forward to erase everything in its path.

Reader's Guide

The Shadow Army functions through Alucard's ability to summon and control countless undead entities simultaneously. These constructs are immune to conventional weaponry; bullets pass through them or fail to stop their momentum, and they regenerate instantly unless destroyed by high-level supernatural means. Visually, the army appears as a chaotic mass of distorted vampires, werewolves, and nameless horrors that seem to bleed into reality. They move with a fluid, unnatural speed, often swarming enemies from all directions. Their primary limitation is their dependence on Alucard; if he is incapacitated or chooses to dismiss them, the army instantly vanishes. Narratively, this power serves as a force multiplier that allows Alucard to overwhelm entire battalions single-handedly. It emphasizes his role as an unstoppable calamity rather than a soldier, forcing opponents to confront the sheer scale of his existence rather than just his combat skills.
